Ghost World

Ghost World is the story of Enid (Thora Birch) and Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson), two supremely ironic, above-it-all teenagers facing the thrilling uncertainty of life after high school. As they attempt to carry their life-long friendship into a new era, the careful dynamics of their bond are jolted, and what seemed like a future of endless possibilities looks more like an encroaching reality of strip malls, low-paying service jobs and fading memories.

When the girls find a particularly pathetic ad in the personals, they waste no time in responding. What starts as a cruel prank triggers unexpected compassion in Enid as she develops an amused fascination for the painfully unhip Seymour (Steve Buscemi.) A hypersensitive malcontent, Seymour has resigned himself to a life of defeated bachelorhood. He becomes Enid's project and the bane of Rebecca's existence. In the end, the girls graduate from a world of childhood ambitions and edge toward the unfathomable mystery-world of adulthood.

Ghost World was directed by Terry Zwigoff. He and Dan Clowes were nominated for an Academy Award® in 2002 for their screen adaptation based on Clowes' graphic novel. Steve Buscemi was honored with the NY Film Critics Award for his performance.
